15: Growing From Blaming and Punishing toward Creative Problem Solving

Summary of Spiral Journey Topic/Dimension/Challenge 15

Under the stress of the world falling apart, and people/life-forms/ecosystems being destroyed, we are vulnerable to falling back on primitive impulses to blame and attack those we identify as causing the injury. But because of the learning dynamics at work in the human world, blaming and punishing will only teach the creators of injury how to hide more successfully, avoid punishment, and counterattack the punishers. Creative problem-solving invites us to step out of our familiar understanding of conflict and imagine all the conflict participants in some entirely new cooperative relationship. This is not easy to accomplish, but there are enough examples of success in reconciling previous opponents to establish that it is in fact possible. We need these breakthrough success stories to keep us from falling back into the "war is the only answer" mindset.
